WHITEHORSE – During question period on March 13, the Yukon Party Official Opposition pushed the Premier and his Liberal government to join leaders across the country and call for Justin Trudeau to stop a planned 25 per cent carbon tax increase on April 1.

Premiers of all political stripes have written to the Prime Minister asking for a halt to the April 1 carbon tax hike as Canadians from coast to coast to coast face increased cost of living pressures. At least 7 provinces have written to the Prime Minister to make this request, including the only other Liberal Premier in the country in Newfoundland.

In December, the territory’s Liberal Premier said he was focused on and believed in, the current carbon tax system and added heating oil should not be exempted. In Question Period on Wednesday, Premier Ranj Pillai confirmed his hardline carbon tax stance and refused to take action to help Yukoners with their cost-of-living crisis.

“The Yukon’s Premier is the lone Premier advocating that the tax be put back on,” said Leader Currie Dixon. “Yukoners see this Liberal government calling for higher costs, even though many families are struggling to put food on the table and a roof over their heads. Yukoners suffered the highest increases in the cost of living for most of last year and should not have to suffer more after April 1.”
